An Ode to Pop Siegel:
Back before détente with China , Jeff and I used to spend a lot of time playing ping pong in the Trebing Court Table Tennis stadium ( the Siegel garage). After hours of practice, we thought we were getting pretty good. One day, a certain gentleman entered the arena and challenged us to a game. He held his paddle in a manner that we had never seen since we Americans had never seen the Chinese play ping pong and while we felt accomplished being able to smash the ball passed our opponents, this master made the ball twist and turn in all kinds of strange directions.
Once in a while he would even emit an Oriental song for the sake of authenticity. Where he learned these skills I do not know but I do know that he had learned this stuff even before Kissinger sent Americans to play ping pong in China .
Always a fun and lovable guy to be around, I assume this is still the case as you reach the milestone of 80. With wishes for many more birthdays to come.
Love,
Mitch
